Rosa Furneaux: An Introduction To Investigative Reporting

Wed 12 Jan 2022 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM GMT Online, Zoom

When Rosa Furneaux started her job at the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, she wasn't a veteran investigative reporter. But honing some simple skills around her day-to-day deadlines showed she was ready for the role. From filing FOIs in lunch breaks, to finding the best investigative angles for features, this event will introduce you to the skills you need to land your first investigative scoop.

This practical event will:

  • Show early-career journalists how they can hone their investigative skills or around their day-to-day reporting,
  • Pull back the curtain on the world of investigative reporting. In particular, we'll look at global health reporting, which has never been more important.

What We'll Cover:

  • What is investigative journalism?
  • How to find the best investigative angle for your feature
  • How to make (and keep) hard-to-reach sources
  • How to send an FOI – and what to ask for
  • How to revamp your CV to show the investigative skills you already have.

Rosa is an investigative global health reporter at the Bureau of Investigative Journalism. Since joining the Bureau in the early days of the pandemic, she's been working to uncover Pfizer's vaccine contracts in Latin America, expose the baby formula industry's unethical pandemic marketing techniques in Asia, and reveal the stretched, secret supply chain of a vital Covid drug putting patients at risk.

Her pandemic reporting has been awarded ABSW and One World Media prizes, and she was a finalist for the Medical Journalist Association Newcomer of the Year award 2021. Previously, she worked at the Thomson Reuters Foundation and Mother Jones Magazine in San Francisco, and earned her Masters in Journalism from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2018.
