At some point in our journalism career, we've all thought about going freelance. But making the jump from a stable income, regular hours, and an office full of colleagues can feel terrifying. Some call it the 'freelance fear'. But with the right planning and support it doesn't have to be scary – and it could be the start of an amazing new career that works how you want it to.
In this hour long workshop, our three speakers will take you through everything you need to know to about tackling 'freelance fear'. This practical session, from three established freelancers, will gives you the practical tools and skills you need to make sure you know how freelancing could work for you and what you need to do to make it happen. We'll look at:
As well as a practical workshop, with interactive exercises, there will also be chance to ask your own questions to our speakers. You can submit these both at the live session or in advance when booking a ticket. You'll also get access to the recording, slides, and any notes or resources. Amelia Tait is a freelance features writer who writes for The Guardian, New York Times, Wired, and Vice, among others. Though she carved a beat in digital culture - talking to the people whose lives are impacted by the internet - she now focuses on anything unusual, strange, or fascinating.
Lateefah Jean-Baptiste is a freelance journalist and PR professional from London. She is also the founder of Career Girl Collective, a newly established platform that aims to educate and empower women writers. She has more than five years of experience in writing articles, features and opinion pieces for national and international magazines and newspapers. Her work can be seen in Metro.co.uk, The Independent, HuffPost UK, Refinery29 and more.
Jem Collins is the founder of Journo Resources and has been freelancing ever since 2016. As well as growing Journo Resources into a thriving media organisation in its own right, she also writes features for a range of outlets including Metro.co.uk, the i Paper, the National Union of Journalists' Magazine The Journalist and many others.
Types Of Ticket
Live Ticket: Select a live ticket if you'd like to watch the session live. You'll receive a Zoom link to join when you order. Don't worry if your plans change though – we will also send you a copy of the recording and session notes via email. This is normally 24-48 hours after the session to allow time for us to edit the recording.
Watch Back / Recorded: If you just want to watch back, please select recorded ticket. This allows us to keep a handle on numbers and make sure we have enough seats around our virtual table. Again, no worries if you change your mind, you will still be sent the Zoom link, so no need to let us know if your plans change. You will typically be sent the recording 24-48 hours after the live session, to give our team time to edit.
