How Journalists Can Work Sensitively With Survivors Of Sexual Abuse
How Journalists Can Work Sensitively With Survivors Of Sexual Abuse
Share this event
Telling stories of sexual abuse is highly delicate work, yet journalists are often left under-resourced on how to do this. So how can we work with survivors in a sensitive way?
Sexual abuse is profoundly traumatic. Working well with survivors is not just about what to do and what to say - but how to be.
By the end of the event, you’ll understand what good and collaborative interaction between reporters and survivors feels like. We’ll offer clear tips from the guidance that On Road Media developed in partnership with Jo Healey, senior news journalist and specialist trainer in trauma reporting. We'll also be joined by freelance journalist Michelle Rawlins.

On Road Media is a charity supporting people and media to create content that changes the world.
We change hearts and minds by bringing people, campaigners, journalists and broadcasters together. We do this by:
Inspiring authentic reporting that moves people. We bring together senior media professionals and people who’ve experienced the issues they’re reporting on. This happens at our interactions: informal meet-ups with journalists, TV and radio producers and celebrities.
Creating supportive networks. We support people with direct experience to tell their stories. We build communities based on shared goals and a strong focus on wellbeing.
Making every word count. We base everything we do on communications science and solid evidence of what works.
