Description
The Bureau of Investigative Journalism's Vicky Gayle is here to demystify the process of FOI requests – from coming up with the idea to making sure they don't get rejected, Vicky is here to coach you through the whole process. Whether you're a reporter at a news organisation or tacking systemic abuses at a community level, they can be powerful tools for change and challenging abuses of power.
Join us in this informative workshop where she'll discuss;
- Coming up with ideas for stories based around information requests,
- Understanding Freedom of Information and Subject Access Requests,
- Filing a request and making sure it's valid,
- Dealing with rejections,
- Moving the story forward to create impact.
Meet The Speaker
Vicky Gayle has made it her mission to trace the health inequalities experienced by chronically sick and disabled people over the pandemic. Over the span of her career, she has sought to uncover the ways migrants have been left out of vaccination schemes, right through to the probing of Britain's care system which leaves its workers often without pay and suitable protections. Still based in the Midlands, Vicky began her journalism career in Birmingham before ending up in Colchester, where she worked as a news reporter at the Daily Gazette and other weekly titles in north Essex. After a secondment with the BBC’s Shared Data Unit in 2018, she returned to Newsquest where she co-led its first data investigations unit. She also served as Black Ballad’s West Midlands commissioning editor for its Black Women in Britain project.
Types Of Ticket
Live Ticket: Select a live ticket if you'd like to watch the session live. You'll receive a Zoom link to join when you order. Don't worry if your plans change though – we will also send you a copy of the recording and session notes via email. This is normally 24-48 hours after the session to allow time for us to edit the recording.
Watch Back / Recorded: If you just want to watch back, please select recorded ticket. This allows us to keep a handle on numbers and make sure we have enough seats around our virtual table. Again, no worries if you change your mind, you will still be sent the Zoom link, so no need to let us know if your plans change. You will typically be sent the recording 24-48 hours after the live session, to give our team time to edit.
