Climate Masterclass: Reporting Through A Climate Science Lens
Thu 23 Feb 2023 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM GMT
Online, Zoom
Description
Climate science — and climate change — is an increasingly important part of our everyday lives across the globe. It's vital that journalists have an understanding of what's going on so they can report it accurately.
While climate journalism is an area in itself, it is also inexplicably tied to many other sectors and subject matters. In this session, experienced climate writer and editor Jocelyn Timperley will go through the basics of reporting on climate science, providing practical tips for reporting through a ‘climate science lens’.
This new and exclusive workshop is the third session in our Refine Newsroom & Reporting Fellowship training series, but we have a very limited number of tickets available for public sale.
What The Workshop Will Cover:
Understanding the basics: climate jargon and traps to look out for;
Advice for dealing with scientific journal articles;
Tools and guidance for reporting on climate science within different journalistic beats e.g. sports, food, lifestyle;
Attracting bigger/mainstream audiences to climate stories;
Preparing for and getting the most out of interviews with experts/researchers;
Meet The Speaker:
Jocelyn Timperley is a freelance climate writer and journalist and currently writes and edits for BBC Future and Future Planet. She previously worked as a staff journalist at Carbon Brief and BusinessGreen and has an undergraduate masters in environmental chemistry from the University of Edinburgh and an MA in science journalism from City, University of London.
Types Of Ticket
Live Ticket: Please select this ticket to get the most out of this session — we will be asking questions the audience wants to know on the evening! You'll receive a Zoom link to join when you order and a reminder a few minutes before the event so you can join us live. Don't worry if you don't feel comfortable chatting — our team can always ask your question for you. Don't worry if your plans change though (we all know WiFi lets you down when you need it most) we will also send you a copy of the recording and session notes via email. This is normally 24-48 hours after the session to allow time for us to edit the recording.
Watch Back / Recorded: If you can't make it to the live session, don't worry — select recorded ticket. This allows us to keep a handle on numbers and make sure we have enough seats around our virtual table. Again, no worries if you change your mind, you will still be sent the Zoom link, so no need to let us know if your plans change. You will typically be sent the recording 24-48 hours after the live session, to give our team time to edit.
