Almost any story you write as a journalist requires speaking to people. But while interviewing is a fundamental part of the job, it's often harder than it sounds. In short, it's an art that needs to be learnt.

In this brand-new workshop with Kemi Alemoru, we'll uncover how to get the most out of your interviews, and the pieces you go on to write. We'll cover:

• The logistics of an interview — what should you share beforehand and afterwards, and how to contact high-profile interviewees;
• Building a relationship with interviewees, to establish trust and rapport; 
• Tips and advice on questions, sensitive topics, and keeping the conversation flowing;
• Knowing which threads to use to write pieces afterwards.

In addition to the workshop, there will also be a chance to ask Kemi your questions directly, either as part of the live Q&A or by submitting questions in advance. All participants will receive a copy of the recording and workshop notes.

Meet The Speaker

Kemi Alemoru is a freelance journalist and formerly culture editor for gal-dem. She's interviewed the likes of NAO who revealed she used to try and pick up guys at the YMCA as a teen, Naomi Campbell who took her to an orphanage to watch as a child was given the model's name, or Beyonce's dad and the other lost Destiny's children on the early days of the girl group's success. Other interviews include Alicia Keys, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Kali Uchis, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Daniel Kaluuya, Zayn Malik, IAMDDB, Issa Rae (twice), Teyana Taylor ( also twice), Spike Lee, Mary J. Types Of Ticket

Live Ticket: Select a live ticket if you'd like to watch the session live. You'll receive a Zoom link to join when you order. Don't worry if your plans change though – we will also send you a copy of the recording and session notes via email. This is normally 24-48 hours after the session to allow time for us to edit the recording.

Watch Back / Recorded: If you just want to watch back, please select a recorded ticket. This allows us to keep a handle on numbers and make sure we have enough seats around our virtual table. Again, no worries if you change your mind, you will still be sent the Zoom link, so no need to let us know if your plans change. You will typically be sent the recording 24-48 hours after the live session, to give our team time to edit.
