Oedipussy: A New Space Opera

OEDIPUSSY is a NEW MUSICAL by Mickey Western & Directed by Sofia Hurwitz.

This philosophical & hilarious space adventure is produced by Phinneus Sonin & THE FOOLS JACKET TROUPE in Burlington, Vermont.

It is a full-length sc-fi musical comedy that features an eclectic cast of local performers.

The Fools Jacket troupe has been producing theatrical experiences in Burlington since 1994 and has been the staple of the Burlington bohemian theater scene. We are the legacy of the Beat generation creating original twists on legendary stories and mythology. For the last 30 years, creators Mickey Western and Phinneus Sonin have dedicated their artistic passion to the Burlington community birthing epic theatrical experiences such as Spielpalast Cabaret, Mickey Western Lineage medicine show, and Troupadore. We have performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Festival of Fools, Burlesque Festivals, and endless local venues including Higher Ground, Flynn Theatre, Contoise Auditorium, and the Off Center for the Dramatic Arts. 

Our newest creation, OEDIPUSSY, is directed and co-produced by Sofia Hurwitz, who has fully flung herself into this epic tale with fervor and gusto. Sofia Hurwitz grew up in New York City, and has lived in Burlington for over a decade. She is immersed in the local bohemian and experimental arts scene as a performer, writer and director, exploring a multitude of mediums and forms. She is passionate about new work & creating outrageous and rebellious art. 

OEDIPUSSY contains a cast & crew of more than 30 of Burlington's brightest up-and-coming starlights and a stellar live band. It is a bold and fantastical Space Odyssey that will light up the Main Street Landing Black Box Theater on July 23rd, 24th, and 25th. 

In an age of manufactured disconnection and dysphoria, OEDIPUSSY is a DARING, VIBRANT production that seeks to show us WHAT IS REAL. It is a heroine's journey and a spiritual quest about identity, sexuality, and trusting your feelings- that will make you laugh all along the way.

It is WILD, WEIRD AND WONDERFUL. 

The creation of "OEDIPUSSY" has involved an intergenerational weave of talents and artistry, starring Melody McMahon & Mac Roche, and includes many other vibrant actors, musicians, and creators of all kinds!

SYNOPSIS

We begin our journey on The Planet Formerly known as Earth now conveniently known as THE PHARM, a land of NEW WORLD- GNU-WORLD international commune LORDED over by the Benevolent TYRANT O'SAURUS REX along with his TEAM, THE PHARMICATORS. On THE PHARM, everyone happily takes THE DEAL, THE PILL and THE THIMBLE, which makes them FEEL NOTHING hence the World has been FREED from EVERYTHING and it's people live in a simple, dull, consumer sediment. ALAS, there is one amongst them, OEDIPUSSY, who does not take THE PILL. She is sitting out on a favorite hillside, on a moonless night, under the twinkling stars, when she makes a discovery that changes her life. Thus begins her Epic Space Odyssey, a quest of self-discovery, passion, meaning, & identity- to truly discover WHAT IS REAL.
