Understanding the Intersections: Race, Gender and Harm

Community Cohesion Grant – Roundtable 1

How do race and misogyny intersect in women's experiences of violence and abuse, and how can we better understand and challenge the assumptions that shape our responses?

Join us for an interactive roundtable exploring the experiences of Black and minoritised women in relation to violence against women and girls (VAWG). Together, we will examine how racism and misogyny can overlap, creating distinct barriers to safety, support and justice.

Through expert insight, group discussions and practical activities, we will explore how media representation, stereotypes, social conditioning and cultural narratives influence our understanding of gender, race and harm.

The session will provide space to reflect on our own assumptions, learn from different perspectives and consider the role we can all play in challenging harmful attitudes and behaviours.

What to expect:

  • Expert insight into how race and misogyny intersect in the experiences of Black and minoritised women.
  • Interactive activities exploring real-world scenarios, barriers to support and the impact of stereotypes.
  • Discussions examining media narratives and the messages we encounter in everyday life.
  • Opportunities to reflect, share perspectives and identify practical ways to create positive change.

This roundtable is open to men from all backgrounds, community leaders, frontline professionals, students, and faith and community representatives. Whether you are joining us for the first time or returning to continue the conversation, your willingness to listen, reflect and engage is welcome.
