Theory into Practice: Understanding and Responding to Burnout

Working in homelessness and support services can be rewarding, meaningful and challenging. The emotional demands of the work, combined with high levels of need, organisational pressures and limited resources, can leave workers at risk of stress, compassion fatigue and burnout.

This Theory into Practice workshop will explore what burnout is, what contributes to it, and how we can recognise the signs in ourselves and those we work alongside. We’ll consider the impact of working in high-pressure and emotionally demanding environments, including how our own experiences and responses can influence the way we work.

The session will move beyond theory to explore practical strategies that can be used in everyday practice to protect wellbeing, maintain healthy boundaries and build sustainable ways of working.

We will explore:

  • What burnout is and how it differs from stress and compassion fatigue
  • The individual, relational and organisational factors that contribute to burnout
  • Recognising early warning signs in ourselves and colleagues
  • The role of boundaries, workload and expectations
  • Practical approaches to managing stress and maintaining wellbeing
  • How reflective practice, supervision and peer support can help
  • Creating sustainable approaches to supporting others without losing sight of our own needs

The workshop will be interactive and reflective, providing space to share experiences, consider current practice and identify practical changes that can be taken back into the workplace.

The aim is not simply to understand burnout, but to turn that understanding into practical action that supports healthier, more sustainable working.
