Join us for a preview screening of the forthcoming feature film “How to Blow Up a Pipeline” (1h 43m), directed by Daniel Goldhaber and based on the controversial book by Andreas Malm.
This “taut and timely thriller, that is part high-stakes heist, part radical exploration of the climate crisis,” follows a group of young environmental activists who set out to sabotage an oil pipeline. The film has won several festival awards and received glowing reviews.
After the screening, activist and nonviolence advocate Rowan Tilly will give a short presentation, followed by discussion.
Rowan will distinguish between violent and nonviolent direct action and the ethics, efficacy, unconscious motives and likely trajectories of both approaches. She will explore the pros and cons of different types of property damage - including the issue of accountability versus covert action - and ask if property damage is intrinsically violent or can still sit within the principles of nonviolence.
She will also examine how gender stereotypes have shaped the perception of sabotage, militancy and radical agendas, drawing on a feminist critique of 1970s US sabotage group The Weather Underground.
Rowan has been a life-long participant in and passionate advocate for nonviolence, drawing on Buddhist and Christian practice. She provides expert advice to Extinction Rebellion, Insulate Britain and Just Stop Oil and is currently working on a book, “Grit! Effective Street-ready Nonviolent Action”, based on her own experience.
Timings: 6 pm for drinks, film starts promptly at 6.30pm followed by a one-pot vegan supper, Rowan's talk and discussion. (Please note the earlier than usual start time.)
