Description
*** PLEASE NOTE: The event takes place at QMUL's BLOC Cinema (E1 4PD) ***
The KCL Strand Film Festival is proud to present a free screening of Origin, the latest film from BAFTA winner and Oscar nominee, Ava DuVernay. Presented in partnership with QMUL's Centre for Film & Ethics, this screening will take place at the BLOC Cinema at Queen Mary, University of London.
Written and directed by DuVernay, Origin chronicles the tragedy and triumph of Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Isabel Wilkerson as she explores the mystery of history, the wonders of romance, and a fight for our future. Origin is an exploration of the creation of racial hierarchy
- from the caste system in India to Nazi Germany.
Based on the number one New York Times best-seller Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson, the film chronicles her investigation into the origin of bigotry itself in the wake of the shooting of Trayvon Martin and the author’s own personal journey with grief. A 2023 nominee for the illustrious Golden Lion award for Best Film at the Venice Film Festival, “Origin” stars recent Academy Award® nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor as Isabel Wilkerson, the first Black woman to win a Pulitzer in Journalism, as well as Jon Bernthal, Victoria Pedretti and Niecey Nash in supporting roles.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion.
