KCL Strand Film Festival: Short Film Fry Up

The 9th KCL Strand Film Festival is proud to present a bite-sized selection of intercontinental short films, each bringing a unique perspective to breakfast and its various roles in our lives. 

We have all your fry-up favourites covered. From Japan, we present Oscar-shortlisted filmmaker Kei Kanamori’s Tomatoes (2024), and there's egg-sistential crisis in the French-Portuguese 2-minute epic, OVO (1994). An Australian tale of romantic reconnection in Hash Browns (2022) sits alongside Bacon ‘N’ Laces - a multi-award-winning documentary following a blind single father and his diner - and King Sausage (2022), a tender stop-motion musical from the Netherlands. And we believe every great breakfast should be followed by dessert, so we treat you to the darkly humorous You Are Not Part of the Cake (2025). Plus, many more ingredients to fill your belly!

This short film selection was specifically designed to display a plurality of themes, styles and genres, representing the borderless nature of food and how it transcends national, exclusionary contexts. Featuring avant-garde gems alongside underseen family-friendly productions, whether you’re looking for pure entertainment or an art-house aesthetic, there is something to whet everyone’s appetite. 

Not only this, but breakfast-related snacks will be provided, and the evening will feature a range of carefully curated introductions before each screening.

The KCL Strand Film Festival (25 March - 1 April 2026) is curated by students on the Film Festivals and Film Festival Studies module in the Department of Film Studies at King's College London.
