Fairfield House Ethio-Jazz Project at Roundhill Barn, Kelston

Sat 12 Jul 2025 6:30 PM - 11:59 PM Roundhill Barn, nearest BA1 9AF

The Fairfield House Ethio-Jazz Project is a tribute to Bath's most famous resident. Some of SW England's finest musicians evoke the musical legacy of HIM Emperor Haile Selassie I, who lived in Bath as a war refugee and gifted his home Fairfield House to the city.

Assembled by multi-instrumentalist Ross Hughes (bass clarinet/flute/synth), the Project performs on July 12th for the first time in an expanded format with Harriet Riley (vibraphone), Riaan Vosloo (double bass) and Mark Whitlam (drums) joined by special guests Laura Jurd (flugelhorn), Stephen 'Blaggy' Blagrove (percussion), Norman 'Rubba' Stephenson (percussion), Adrian Utley (electrical guitar) and Will Gregory (sax/oboe/synth).

Ethio-Jazz combines Amharic modes and tonality, African and Latin polyrhythms with atmospheric improvisation. Also with raga-based ideas, this band recreates the heady atmosphere of pre-revolutionary Addis Ababa in the early 70s, with a mix of classic tracks and original compositions.

The gig will be recorded for a live album with profits going to Fairfield House.

Doors open at 6.30 pm and there is parking off the farm track nearby. An authentic Ethiopian feast and bar drink will be available for purchase.
