Kennington Bioscope, in association with Kevin Brownlow, presents a weekend of silent comedy films, all with live musical accompaniment.
Programme may be subject to change, but hopefully will include The Patsy (1928), starring Marion Davies and Marie Dressler; Harry Langdon’s best-ever feature The Strong Man (1926), directed by Frank Capra; Would You Believe It (1929), Walter Forde’s last British starring feature; and Ernst Lubitsch’s superb comedy of manners, The Marriage Circle (1924).
Silent comedy expert Steve Massa will be presenting ‘Rediscovering Roscoe’, based on his latest book about Roscoe ‘Fatty’ Arbuckle, once rated second only to Chaplin, plus a surprise Arbuckle -directed feature recently discovered at the Cinema Museum itself. Other highlights will be recently restored shorts with our own Lupino Lane, some long lost Mack Sennetts – and Laurel and Hardy in some nice messes with Jean Harlow.
Saturday evening will feature Harold Lloyd’s famous Safety Last (1923) with it’s nail-biting ‘hanging on the clock’ climax, and the finale on Sunday will be Buster Keaton’s last silent and rarely seen Spite Marriage (1929).
Programmes run from 10 am until late.
Booking fees are to cover the cost we have to pay for credit card processing. You are welcome to pay by cash or cheque on the door. Cheques should be made payable to Kennington Bioscope Limited.
