Presenters:

Brandon Jones, MA, Renita Wilson, LICSW, Steve Cambrice, LMFT, Dr. J. Phillip Rosier, Jr. LMFT, PsyD

The purpose of this workshop is to discuss, demonstrate, and practice the art of engaging with clients in therapeutic settings. Participants will explore the implications of race, culture, ethnicity, social, economic status and other ways people identify. Clinicians will be invited to consider their cultural identity and experiences as both assets and potential barriers to creating a solid therapeutic relationship to do good clinical work. While this event is generally geared towards providers and systems who are providing therapeutic services, much of the content will be useful and effective across settings in which communities of color are served. We welcome members from all social services, behavior health, and mental health to attend.

Objectives:

  • Embrace client’s ethnic and cultural identity as a pillar of the clinical work
  • Explore specific techniques to engage clients
  • Name ethical standards for working cross culturally
  • Embracing ones own culture as an asset and not allowing it to be a barrier
  • Combining Theory and Practice
  • The importance of culturally responsive supervision and mentoring

Presenters and Topics

Brandon Jones, MA, Moving beyond cultural competence to cultural intelligence

Participants will have the opportunity to learn how to move forward with the understandings of Equity and Diversity Inclusion work. Most have had training and learning opportunities in “Cultural Competence”. However there continues to be struggles and issues finding the best ways to connect and treat our client populations. In this training, participants will learn about what Cultural Intelligence is, how we can apply it in our work and relationships with client.

Renita Wilson, LICSW, Practicing (Ethical) Cross Cultural Supervision

During the panel Ms. Wilson will facilitate a discussion about providing ethical supervision. The panel will discuss strategies and techniques that could enhance supervision and mentoring relationships. No matter how new or confident we believe we are in our role as a supervisor or supervisee, it is important that we continue to explore who we are as it relates to providing or receiving supervision in a cross-cultural fashion. The panel will also process the ethic of not supervising from a culturally responsive stance.

Steve Cambrice, LMFT, Internal Family Systems: Utilizing a cultural lens

By locating the source of healing with the client Internal Family Systems (IFS) frees the therapist to focus on guiding the client’s access to their true Self and supporting them in harnessing their wisdom. This approach makes IFS a non-pathologizing, hopeful framework within which to practice psychotherapy. It provides an alternative understanding of psychic functioning and healing that allows for innovative techniques in relieving client’s symptoms and suffering. This presentation will demonstrate effective use of IFS as a tool to embrace client’s cultural identity.

Dr. J. Phillip Rosier, Jr. LMFT, PsyD, Cultural Integration of Healing Concepts

This training will support previous studies on multicultural counseling conducted by Sue & Sue. More specifically (Sue et al, 1982, 1992), suggest a 3-dimension model that focus on:

  1. Beliefs and Attitudes (identify your cultural belief and your client’s cultural belief)
  2. Knowledge (Increase cultural knowledge)
  3. Skills (Utilize skills that are congruent with the culture of the client)

The Multicultural Integration training will help participants integrate their own beliefs and attitudes about their own culture and approach to practice. This training will start through a multiple definition of multicultural counseling. Second, it will focus on helping participants identify their own cultural values as well as the cultural values and beliefs inherent in the helping field of Marriage and Family Therapy, Psychology. Third the participants will gain knowledge about different cultures and get exposure about the cultural values and beliefs of multiple cultures. Last participants will leave with strategies, interventions and skills used to identify and integrate multicultural values into practice.
