Tree Nursery Tuesdays - volunteer with us
We're getting our community tree nursery up and running. Come and get involved!
Spend some time in the beautiful countryside at our new community tree nursery, and help us develop the project. We're growing trees from seed (collected across Sheffield and South Yorkshire) and getting them ready to be planted with communities and schools across the region.
No experience necessary, but any relevant knowledge or skills you can share with us would be very welcome, e.g. growing trees, gardening, joinery, etc.
Please note these volunteer sessions are for adults only (18+) - though 16-17 year olds can take part if accompanied by an adult.
This project is funded by The National Lottery Community Fund and supported by The Tree Council.
Where?
Our tree nursery is based at Townfield Head Farm, near Stannington, Sheffield. See below for directions.
When?
Volunteer days take place on Tuesdays during school term time. Join us from 11.30am - 2.30pm (come for the whole session or just part of it).
Why?
- Boost your mental health and wellbeing by connecting with nature in the fresh air of the open countryside with beautiful views
- Help nature and the environment by growing trees to be planted in the local area
- Meet like-minded people, make new friends or spend some time with nature - whatever you need
- Learn new skills and share knowledge about gardening, forestry and conservation
What you'll need:
- Clothing: The site is very exposed and can be quite windy, often feeling chillier than in the city. Please wear suitable clothing, hat, etc. for staying warm and dry. On sunny days, we recommend wearing a sunhat and sun lotion.
- Footwear: We strongly advise wearing sturdy, waterproof shoes such as walking boots or wellies.
- All tools and equipment will be provided, including gloves.
- Refreshments: hot and cold drinks, and biscuits will be provided. Please bring a reusable cup if you can.
- You're welcome to bring your own lunch.
Getting here:
Our tree nursery is based at Townfield Head Farm, Stannington, Sheffield S6 6GR - see Google maps or use ///dawn.ripe.create (What3Words).
From the farm car park, take the footpath to the left of the horse menage/arena until you come to a gate on the right, where you will see our nursery field with wooden shelter and raised beds. The nursery field is located at ///anyone.paper.claim (What3Words).
By car: The tree nursery is based at Townfield Head Farm, approx. 8 miles (25-30 mins) from Sheffield city centre. See directions from Sheffield on Google Maps
If coming from Stannington direction (east), look out for the wind turbine on the left on Short Lane. The driveway to the farm is just past the turbine, to the left.
If coming from the west, you'll pass Moorwood Equine/Farm on the right on Long Lane. The driveway to Townfield Head farm is just further up, on the right just before the wind turbine.
Please note, there is limited car parking at the farm, so we encourage you to car share or come by bike/bus/foot where possible.
By public transport / on foot: The tree nursery site is not on a bus route - the nearest bus stop is 30+ minutes away on foot (1.5 miles) - Nethergate/Oldfield Road (Stannington) where you can get the 81 bus that runs between Stannington and Dore via Sheffield City Centre. Please note, the walk from this bus stop to the tree nursery would involve walking along a section of a fairly busy country road with no footpaths, though there is grass verge.
There is a footpath from Riggs High Road, which goes right past the tree nursery field (green marker on the OS map below). The footpath starts at ///many.timing.object (What3Words) - see the red marker. Please note, the footpath has a few stiles and therefore may not be suitable for those with mobility issues.

We can try to organise lifts to/from Stannington or Malin Bridge tram stop car park. Please let us know when you book if you need to arrange a lift.
Facilities and accessibility:
There is a toilet on site, a few minutes walk from the tree nursery field.
Please note, this event is taking place on farmland, so all participants are advised to be aware of the dangers this may bring and to keep to specified areas/paths.
Some of the ground is uneven, and also wet and muddy, depending on the weather. The site is not currently wheelchair accessible.
Some of the activities are heavy duty so we highly recommend you only partake to the extent of your capabilities.
We want everyone to feel welcome at our events. If you have additional needs or anything that you'd like to discuss with us beforehand, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
If you have any questions before you book, please email Anna@KidsPlantTrees.Org or call 07746 806034.
We look forward to seeing you there!
