This series 'Who are we collecting for anyway?' focuses on the social aspects of collections management - from decolonization, repatriation, and cultural narratives to accessibility, blockbuster exhibitions, and “hoarding” of museums. Over this three part series, we will examine and unpack who comes to our museums and who works in culture - who is missing and how we can open our doors and our work to be inclusive and diverse. Participants will take a critical look at what we do, why we do it, how we do it, and who we are doing it for.
All three workshops will be hosted by Caitlin Southwick who is the founder of Ki Culture and Ki Futures. Join us for an immersive series as we reflect on the role of museums.

Social Sustainability in Museums - Tuesday 7th May
In the first workshop, we will delve into various aspects of social sustainability: examining the meaning and implications behind various terms and concepts. What does decolonization actually mean? And how may it differ in different contexts? What is the difference between inclusion and belonging? Is there an important difference when it comes to accessibility and bringing in new audiences? Join colleagues from around the globe to get insights on how we interpret social sustainability and discover why it matters.
The Mission of Culture - What Are We Doing and For Whom?- Tuesday 4th June
Why did you get into the cultural sector? For most cultural professionals, we dedicate our lives to the field because we had a wonderful experience at a museum or were exposed to art that made a profound impression on us at one point in our lives. But do we ever stop to think about just how lucky we are? Not everyone has the luxury of working in culture, much less enjoying culture. Why is that? When it comes to culture - who is in and who is out?
In this workshop, participants will be given the time to reflect on the purpose and the mission of their organizations and their work, and look at who we are surrounded by. Join this session to unpack the mission and vision of culture - and how we can open the doors to ensure we are not the only ones who get the opportunity to engage with our art and heritage.
The Ins and Outs of Exhibitions and Social Impact - Tuesday 18th June
Why do we create exhibitions? To draw audiences, to share art, to tell stories? But where do exhibitions come from - and where are they going?
One of the most powerful aspects of culture is our ability to tell stories. We shape society through our portrayal of history. But what stories are we telling? Who gets to decide? Can examining our storytelling ensure a socially just future? And is it sustainable and respectful to us as cultural professionals to create multiple exhibitions every year just to throw them in the trash?
Join this session to look at exhibitions - from blockbusters and hyperproduction to co-curation, we will examine how social sustainability is at the heart of exhibitions and discuss the future of curation to ensure that it is relevant and sustainable.
