This series 'Circular Economy in Culture' focuses on the implementation of circular economy into cultural practices. We know by now that there is no such thing as trash - all material has value! And using circular economic principles, it is possible to eliminate waste. However, this takes some planning and strategy. So how can we prepare ourselves for applying circular economy to ensure that we are effective and in time? Join this series to explore real life applications of circular economy.
All three workshops will be hosted by Caitlin Southwick who is the founder of Ki Culture and Ki Futures. Join us for an immersive series as we reflect on the role of museums. All workshops are online at 16.00 UTC/ 18.00 CEST/ 12.00 EDT/ 09.00 PDT.
This series includes:
Workshop 1: Circular Economy in Public Art - Tuesday 2nd July (2 hours)
In the first workshop, we will unpack real life scenarios to see how we can make public art circular. From identifying key stakeholders and establishing timelines and budgets, we will mock up a fully circular public art show which will pave a blueprint for implementing circular economy into art showcases globally! Join colleagues from around the world to co-create and inspire real action.
Workshop 2: Circular Networks - Tuesday 9th July (1.5 hours)
Circularity is all about sharing, borrowing, reusing, repurposing, and upcycling. So how do we do this on a local scale? What circular networks are available in your area - or - can you start one? Join this session to learn what a circular network is and build a blueprint for how to get involved or make a circular network in your context.
Workshop 3: Circular Exhibitions - Tuesday 6th August (2 hours)
One of the most wasteful practices in museums is the temporary exhibition. From new walls and paint to pedestals and display cases, so many materials are built and then discarded for 6 month shows. We aren’t going to stop making exhibitions - so how can we make them without making waste? This session will apply the principles of circular economy to exhibitions - from planning and design to building, execution, and communication. Join your colleagues to see examples and to build your own sustainable circular exhibition.
Workshop 4: Packing and Shipping - Tuesday 20th August (1.5 hours)
Art transportation is the second most carbon intensive activity of the museum world behind climate control. From custom built crates to all the plastic bubble wrap - how can we stop the waste? Join this workshop to explore alternatives to linear packing and shipping practices to eliminate waste from art handling and transport.
Workshop 5: Circular Art Production - Tuesday 3rd September (1.5 hours)
Artists have the most impactful opportunity to eliminate waste by turning trash into treasure. Many artists are utilizing their work to reuse or upcycle materials - so how can we jump on that bandwagon? Join this session to examine eliminating waste and toxicity in art materials and explore what materials you can use in your practice to support the circular economy.
