Research in the Global South

The Research Culture team (Arts and Humanities) and the Global Cultures Institute are hosting a roundtable discussion on research in the Global South, taking place in the REACH Space, Strand, on Thursday, 27 March 2025, from 4-6 pm.

• Catherine Boyle (Languages, Literatures and Cultures)
• Toby Green (Languages, Literatures and Cultures; History)
• Eka Ikpe (African Leadership Centre, Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy)
• Ella Parry-Davies (English)

The discussion will address a range of important topics, including intellectual and theoretical perspectives on research in the Global South, as well as the methodologies employed in such studies. It will explore the nature of collaborative relationships, both with research organisations and individual researchers, as well as the exchange of knowledge that takes place within these partnerships. In addition, the event will cover collaborations with local partners, such as NGOs, government agencies, and communities, and the role these relationships play in shaping research. Further discussions will delve into the impact of research and its implications for policy, along with the challenges and requirements related to grant funding and working with funders. Ethics and integrity in research will also be a key focus, as well as the practical, structural, operational, and administrative considerations that arise in the context of research in the Global South.

How to find the REACH space (a visual guide)

The REACH Space is located on Level 3, Surrey Street East Wing building. Enter the Strand building through the main reception and walk straight ahead to Level 0 of the King’s Building. Walk past a flight of stairs on your left, after which take an immediate left, signposted on the floor as ‘Access to East Wing, Philosophy & North Wing’. Walk straight ahead until you come to some double wooden doors on your right that lead into the East Wing. Then, either take the lift or stairs up to Level 3 where you’ll find the REACH Space.
