Please join us for this Inaugural Lecture as we celebrate Professor Susannah Ticciati's appointment as Professor of Christian Doctrine.

Augustine argues that God is the kind of ‘thing’ that is found only in order to be sought all the more avidly. In this lecture, Susannah Ticciati will explore the implication of this claim: that belief in God, who is not a thing, serves to prevent premature closure of the activity of searching. This is to embrace human fallibility, the opposite of which is ideology, or better, idolatry.

The evening will start with Evensong in the Chapel at 5:30pm for those who wish to join, during which Professor Ticciati will be installed. This will be followed by her lecture at 6:30pm in the Safra Lecture Theatre, and a drinks reception afterwards.

Susannah Ticciati joined the department of Theology and Religious Studies at King’s College London in 2005. Her recent publications include A New Apophaticism: Augustine and the Redemption of Signs (Brill, 2013) and On Signs, Christ, Truth and the Interpretation of Scripture (Reading Augustine Series; Bloomsbury, 2022).
