Who gets to tell the story of the Amazon?

Join us for a screening of Jari Project, a powerful documentary by Amazonian filmmaker Priscila Brasil, followed by a roundtable conversation on territory, power, and narrative. The evening brings together journalists, researchers, artists, and activists to ask a question at the heart of the climate crisis: who holds the authority to tell these stories?

This event is free and open to academics, journalists, students, climate activists, and anyone who cares about the future of environmental storytelling.

The Documentary

Jari Project

Dir. Priscila Brasil · 61 min · Pará, Brazil

Priscila Brasil — an Amazonian filmmaker with over 20 years of experience in documentary and music video production, and founder of the Free Amazon Film School — turns her camera on Project Jari: billionaire Daniel J. Ludwig’s infamous experiment in treating the Amazon as a corporate testing ground. Focusing on one of the most controversial development projects in the region’s history, the film exposes the devastating and ongoing impact of mismanaged development on local communities and the environment. It is environmental storytelling from the inside out — grounded, rigorous, and told from where the consequences land.

About the Research

ECOLA: Environmental Communication in Latin America

This event is part of ECOLA, a postdoctoral research project exploring the challenges of producing, framing and circulating environmental stories — with a particular focus on Brazil and the wider Latin American context. ECOLA is funded by UKRI and hosted at King’s College London in partnership with PUC-Rio.

The project explores how storytelling can be a practice of climate justice — repositioning communities most affected by the climate crisis as the authors of their own narratives, rather than subjects of coverage. Rather than focusing on the technical dimensions of climate change, ECOLA asks: whose voices shape the stories we tell about the environment, and what is lost when those voices are absent?
