Join us for the first meeting of a new Sustainable Healthcare Community of Practice. This is a space for colleagues working across healthcare at King's to connect, share practice and learn from one another.
Why do we need sustainable healthcare?
We know that climate change and ecological decline are affecting our health, whether via air pollution, heatwaves or mental health impacts. At the same time, the NHS is responsible for 4-5% of the UK's carbon emissions and has committed to reaching net zero by 2045 (BMA, 2024). Delivering high-quality care that is environmentally sustainable is now a core part of good healthcare, and one that today's students expect us to model and teach.
The King's Sustainability Strategy (2026-2030) commits us to embedding sustainability across education, research and operations. As a university with world-renowned expertise in healthcare education, research and practice, we are well placed to contribute, and this community will help us do so collectively.
What's involved
Our aim is to build an informal, supportive network where we can exchange ideas, showcase good practice, tackle shared challenges, and enable new collaborations across disciplines. At this first meeting, we will:
- Meet fellow colleagues from across King's
- Hear from the community founders: Dr Jocelyn Cornish (Adult Nursing), Dr Rachel Gibson (Nutrition & Dietetics), and Dr Flora Smyth Zahra (Dentistry)
- Agree what we would like the community to offer and how it should run
- Shape priorities and plans for future meetings
This community is for anyone engaged in teaching or research who is interested in the sustainability of our healthcare systems. No prior experience or expertise in sustainability is needed.
