Guy's Hospital: 300 Years (a New book)

Fri 8 May 2026 7:00 PM - Tue 30 Jun 2026 10:30 PM Guys Hospital, SE1 9RT

From humble beginnings, Guy’s Hospital grew out of the shadow of St Thomas’s 300 years ago. Surviving World Wars and financial crises, Guy’s has come to be synonymous with excellence, as a hospital and school, famous the world over. On opening the Guy’s Tower in 1976, H. M. Queen Elizabeth II reflected that, despite the many changes over the years, she asserted that:

‘Guy’s will … retain the caring approach to its work for the community which has been the one constant characteristic of its history.’

This 580 page book is a collection of essays, histories and illustrations that celebrate the life, times and personalities associated with Guy’s Hospital over the last fifty years.

This tercentenary book on the History of Guys Hospital contains over 110 articles and features contributions from over 100 individuals from the likes of Professor Ian Abbs, Professor Sir Cyril Chantler and many more. Our chapters include introduction, clinical organisation & provision, research, education, student sport, student societies, interesting articles, and the personalities associated with Guy's. It concentrates on the last 50 years, since the celebrations after 250 years in 1976. Over 550 pages of illustrated Guy's history.

Compiled by the Editorial Committee of the Guy’s, King’s College and St Thomas’ Hospitals Gazette estd. 1872.
