The 2026 Official UK "Wife" Carrying Championships

The Race

Teams of two tackle a 253m obstacle course filled with twists, jumps and splashes as the competitors carry their partner through the course using one of three classic techniques; piggyback, fireman’s carry (over the shoulder), Estonian style – where the “wife” hangs upside-down on the carrier’s back with their legs over the shoulders.

This unique, fun sporting event combines endurance, humour and teamwork to make it to the finish line.

A Challenge

For context, the fastest time ever recorded in the Guinness World Records is 56.9 seconds, set by Margo Uusorg and Sandra Kullas in 2006. Think you can beat it?

Event Timing

The initial batch of races begin at 12pm.  There will be three heats lasting around 30 minutes in total, that will include 8 or 9 races per heat.  There will be 30 minute gaps between heats.  The Prize giving ceremony will be around 3pm.   

Please be prepared to be at the event between 11:30am though till 4pm.

A place at the 2026 World Wife Carrying Championship in Finland (plus a contribution towards their travel costs).

Some of the rules…

You will get wet.  You will get tired.  You may trip and fall, but everyone will have fun!

The “wife” does not have to be a spouse, it could be a work partner, a friend or family member, your gym or team buddy

Any gender pairing is welcome, but we do insist that both parties are human!

Both participants must be over 18 year old

The carried partner must weigh at least 49kg (If they are lighter then they will receive a weighted backpack)

Whether you’re competing seriously or simply taking part for fun (fancy dress perhaps), it’s all about teamwork.

Location & Parking

The Official UK “Wife” Carrying Championships are being hosted within the Kirkcudbright Country Fair. This is an annual event and is located at The Carse, Kirkcudbright, South West Scotland. 

Parking is available onsite and also regular free shuttle buses run between Kirkcudbright town centre and the venue location.

Ticket Purchase

Here you are able to purchase a team entry ticket (a ticket covering both the carrier and the one being carried). 

Bonus Value

Your team ticket also includes free access for both contestants to the Country Fair on both the 18th and 19th July.  This would normally cost £40.

The Event Organiser

Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities is a local charity, mainly run by volunteers, that focuses on bringing tourism into the local area of Kirkcudbright to help support the local town and those who live and work there.  We also hope that you enjoy the various events  that we host throughout the year as well as the spectacular location that you'll be visiting.
