Kenkyukai is a rope study group, where intermediate/advanced rope people are facilitated and challenged to expand their skillset by tying novel things and comparing and iterating their solutions, in a peer teaching peer collaborative environment.

Each month, the session has a topic or problem given for everyone to work on, and we work in sessions to innovate, then report our results and then try again with what we have learned. The goal is to create new ideas, expand our skills, grow in different ways beyond the local teachers, etc.

The sessions are facilitated and guided by Aush. We use the term facilitated because the format is not that of a teacher teaching an idea and students replicating, but more a facilitator giving tools and feedback and letting participants explore and discover.

Kenkyukai was popular in its previous iteration about 5 years ago, so we are hoping theres just as much interest now!

The session has no requirements regarding (disallowing) switching as is usual for classes, and is a much more loose format, so enjoy. Single tickets have no guarantee of being paired up, so ensure you bring a friend. Observation only is fine but we encourage involvement. If you want to try and do the session self-tying, go nuts.

This Month: Hotrods

This May, our theme is performance tuning. We will: 

• Participate in a warm up exercise designed to push ties outside of memorised forms and class ties.
• Discussion to identify a list of attributes about tying, like neatness, speed, flow, aesthetic, pace, position; etc. 
• Session facilitated by Aush on pointers or improvements that fit the categories.
• Peers will be asked to pick 1 - 3 attributes and to form a novel idea on how to tweak or improve them.
• Peers will test their theories in a tying session.
• All return for discussion
• Iterate until we either perfect the art of rope, expire from boredom, or run out of time in the session, which ever comes first.

Facilitator: Aush

Aush ( https://nawaau.sh/ ) is a kinbaku geek since 2014, and has learned multiple styles in Australia, Japan and Europe. He currently prioritises his own practice based on Naka style, Yukimuran Style with many ideas mixed in from others. Take in everything, keep what is useful, discard the rest.

Aush founded Kenkyukai originally in 2021, and ran monthly sessions for about a year. Now, with our fantastic new Brisbane venue, Tether Salon, it is time to bring back our 'Research Meeting'.
