This will be a bit of a departure from my usual exploration of Medieval mythological texts, because, for the most part, Scotland doesn’t have them. It’s impossible to offer an overview of Scottish folklore in a three-week class, so I’ll be going for depth in areas where I know the territory. We'll look at folk-tales, ballads, and social history as I found it during the years I lived in Scotland.
I haven’t finalised the contents of the class yet, but I expect to concentrate on the Lothians and Borders regions, perhaps with a visit to the islands of Islay and Jura. I expect to touch on topics like witchcraft and elves, weaving that in with local history. We’ll see where that takes us!
I hope to offer a bit more detail about the content of the class nearer the start date (or you could just trust me). As I did with the Shapeshifters and Magical Animals class a few years ago, I'm kind of developing this course on the fly, so I may offer another three-week unit in the new year.
