Rashiecoats is often called 'The Scottish Cinderella'
If you love folktales, you should really meet her.
Scotland doesn’t really have the kind of Medieval ‘mythological’ texts that we find in Ireland and Wales. However, it is particularly rich in folk tales. The first time I heard the story of Rashiecoats (so called for her beautiful dress made of green rushes) I was enthralled. This story exists in several versions and has deep roots in European folklore, as it turns out.
The Rashiecoats stories are filled with magical animals, kings, princes, and plenty of nefarious shenanigans. There's danger, romance, a few laughs, and the heroine has a fabulous wardrobe! This is a great class for lovers of folklore, but I think it will prove fruitful for students of Celtic mythology, also, as we look at how quickly and widely a story can spread and mutate into different versions.
Come for the magic – stay for a bit of scholarship.
