The Triads of Britain

The Triads of Britain (Trioedd Ynys Prydein) are a varied collection which served as memory aids for storytellers. The ideas they present give us ‘supplementary’ information about events or individuals mentioned elsewhere, and often present stories found nowhere else. My aim will be to cover the triads which mention characters from the Mabinogion, The Old North, or who are generally considered deities (around 60 triads) grouped into categories.

To enjoy this class, you need a working knowledge of The Four Branches of the Mabinogi, and characters/events relating the The Old North. (Suggestions for reading/viewing to get you up to speed will be provided in advance.)

Textbook
Trioedd Ynys Prydein is a fascinating work of scholarship which explores the people and stories mentioned in the Triads in great breadth and depth. As such, it's invaluable to students of early Welsh literature. This class is both about exploring the Triads themselves, and about learning how to use Rachel Bromwich's book to its full advantage. 

You must have a copy of Trioedd Ynys Prydein by Rachel Bromwich (preferably 4th edition, 2014 or later). It is currently out of print, but electronic copies are available.  I recommend getting the Kindle version unless you can easily afford the current prices for physical copies. What to expect from this class:
Homework: Reading, research and sharing
This class requires participation. Students are encouraged to do a small amount of research each week on a figure or story from the week's selection of triads, to present very informally in class. 

Weekly online class includes my presentations, student presentations, Q&A sessions, moderated discussions. Classes usually last around 90 minutes.

Access to class recording if you need it. I strongly encourage you to attend the Zoom sessions as much as you can.

Weekly notes. You will receive a PDF after each class. Notes will include:

• Important points and graphics from my presentations
• links or citations to any texts referenced in the presentations
• links and citations to further reading on the topics covered, which you can follow up on, if you wish.
