Have you ever visited a natural spring where water wells up mysteriously forming a pool, or pours miraculously out of the rocks? It’s hardly suprising that people have always seen these places as special. They are a source of clean drinking water, but also known as sacred. They are often associated with ancient deities or Christian saints, with both Christians and Pagans turning to them for healing, granting petitions, or divination and prophecy.

Some springs only bubble away quietly, filling a small pool, staying local. Others are the ultimate source of great rivers - and rivers have their own personalities - defining the regions through which they flow, and frequently seen as embodiments of deities. Their estuaries, too, might be seen as sacred openings where land and sea, fresh water and salt water meet and mix.

Water is rarely stationary. It’s hard to confine and control. Stories of floods, freak waves, permanent inundations, and the formation of lochs also feature in myth and folklore.

Join me as we explore the sacred waters of Britain, Gaul and Ireland, and the deities associated with them.
