Timings

2pm start (finish at 3pm). Track open for practice from 1.30pm.

This event is the third in the 2026 Northern Roll roller ski challenge series* and an opportunity for skiers to ski as many laps as possible of the cycle circuit at Salt Ayre, Lancaster, in one hour.

It is open to skiers (with an ability equivalent to a one-star proficiency award and above), with the option to ski for as much of the hour as they wish.

Refreshments will be available.

The event begins on the stroke of 2pm and will be run as a free technique race (classic or skate). The race will end at 3pm (with the ringing of the by-now-famous-and-slightly-worn Lakeland cowbell), with any skier still on the circuit allowed to complete the lap they are on. At the start only, competitors will be required to double pole for a designated short distance.

Northern Roll event entry

Entry to the event is priced at £10.

To participate in this event, a participant will need to belong to one of the following organisations:

  • Snowsport England (SE) blue membership or greater
  • Snowsport Scotland
  • Snowsport Cymru Wales
  • British Nordic Development Squad (BNDS)

Participants aged under 18 on the day of the event must be accompanied by an appropriate adult. The adult does not need to purchase a ticket if not taking part in the event.

Participation is only possible by booking through this site. Bookings close at 11.59pm on Thursday 2nd July 2026.

Safety

A cycle helmet in good condition and fitted appropriately as well as eye protection (sunglasses or safety glasses) must be worn at all times when on the track. Gloves, elbow and knee pads are optional, but recommended depending on level of ability. Safety equipment is not provided by Lakeland Cross Country Ski Club and any competing skier will need to bring their own.

Event rules

This event is run in accordance with the Northern Roll Series rules. These can be read at: https://www.bmccsa.org.uk/northern-series

*Northern Roll Roller Ski Challenge Series

The Northern Roll Roller Ski Challenge Series is four events at four cycle circuit venues across the North of England.

Each event is hosted by a different cross-country ski club, with the four clubs – Lakeland, Manchester, Tyneside and Yorkshire Dales – coming together to create the series.

The events follow a simple format – roller ski as many laps of the cycle circuit as you can in one hour. The series winners are those with the greatest distance skied across the events.

The fun challenges are ideal training for those planning to take part in on-snow ski races, or for skiers simply wanting to set themselves a challenge against the clock.
