Lecture: The Dampier Site:
A Buried Mississippian (A.D. 1100 – 1200) Market and Ceremonial Center on the Missouri River Bottoms in Chesterfield, Missouri
Synopsis: Nearly 1000 years before the current stores and restaurants were placed within the Missouri River valley in Chesterfield, a large market and civic-ceremonial center existed. The presentation will discuss the goods from across the U.S. discovered at this market. Also, ceremonial activities conducted at this unique site will be discussed.
Bio: Joe Harl graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with an MA in Anthropology, specializing in Archaeology. He has performed Precontact and Historical archaeological investigations across Missouri and Illinois since 1978 with the University of Missouri-St. Louis from 1978–1994 and is now with the Archaeological Research Center of St. Louis, Inc., of which he is part owner. Harl has completed over a thousand cultural resource management studies in Missouri and Illinois. He has served as a principal investigator on various archival reviews, Phase I cultural resource surveys, Phase II archaeological testing, data recovery investigations, and monitoring. Harl is familiar with federal, state, and tribal requirements guiding these investigations. He has served on the board of directors for the Missouri Archaeological Society, the Missouri Association of Professional Archaeologists, and the St. Charles County Historical Commission. He is currently a member of the Society of American Archaeology, Society for Historical Archaeology, Midwest Archaeological Conference, Southeast Archaeological Conference, and Missouri Archaeological Society.
