Massively popular with attendees when she visited us to give a talk last year, Professor Joann Fletcher is returning to Land of Iron for a summertime special.

With the ancient Egyptians well-known for their lavish use of gold and a wide variety of stones for both personal adornment and monumental structures, this talk will examine the ways in which they extracted such materials from their distinctive landscape and how these were then processed to serve multiple purposes.

Prof. Joann Fletcher is based in the Department of Archaeology at the University of York and is patron of Barnsley Museums & Heritage Trust, patron of Scarborough's Big Ideas By the Sea festival and Lead Ambassador for the Egypt Exploration Society. Her BAFTA-winning TV work includes the BBC series 'Immortal Egypt with Joann Fletcher', and as part of an international team which discovered Europe's earliest use of coal, she is currently researching mining in the ancient world.
