Heritage Walks - Lumpsey Mine

Join us for the first of four guided walks focused on our local mining industry and heritage.

The mine at Lumpsey was opened in 1882, and is located approximately a quarter of a mile south of Brotton. In 1921, just over a hundred years ago, the mine supported a working crew of nearly five hundred men and boys and was often used to showcase new and innovative equipment, and was the only mine in the area that made use of hydraulic drills. The mine ran until 1954 where it was eventually closed, ending over seventy years of mining in the hills above Carlin How.

The walk will take us from the entrance of Land of Iron into the fields behind Carlin How, and consists of some moderate climbing and a chance of mud if it has been raining in the days prior, so good walking boots are advised. The walk will take approximately 3 to 4 hours, so it is strongly advised that visitors bring drinking water with them as we will have no access to clean running water anywhere along our walk with the exception of when we begin and on the walk back. There will be an opportunity to stop and have a snack once we have arrived at the mine site.

The walk will begin at 10:00am from the entrance of Land of Iron. 

Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.
