Heritage Walks - Lumpsey Mine

Following the popularity of our summer heritage walks, we’re returning to Lumpsey Mine for another guided walk exploring the remains, landscape and stories of East Cleveland’s ironstone mining industry.

Lumpsey Mine opened in 1882 and is located approximately a quarter of a mile south of Brotton. By 1921, the mine employed nearly 500 men and boys. It was often used to showcase new and innovative mining equipment and was the only mine in the area to make use of hydraulic drills. The mine eventually closed in 1954, bringing an end to more than 70 years of mining in the hills above Carlin How.

The walk will take us from the entrance of Land of Iron, through the fields behind Carlin How and towards the former Lumpsey Mine site.

The route is approximately five miles long and is expected to take between three and four hours. It includes one moderate climb, some road walking at the beginning and end of the route, and sections that may become muddy after wet weather.

The former mine site is uneven in places and can occasionally be rubbish-strewn, so sturdy walking boots or other suitable footwear are strongly recommended.

Please bring drinking water, weather-appropriate clothing and a snack or packed lunch. There will be an opportunity to stop for a short break once we reach the mine site.

The walk will begin at 10:00am from the entrance of Land of Iron.

Tickets must be booked in advance as places are limited.

Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.
