Heritage Walks - Upleatham Mine

The second in our series of heritage walks looking at the local Ironstone mining industry of Cleveland.

A relatively small mine consisting of a parish of approximately 1400 acres, Upleatham mine resides in the area of Errington Woods and sits on an elevated position between Guisborough and Marske. Worked from 1851, the mine employed an average of approximately 500 men and boys throughout its lifetime. The seam beneath Upleatham was about 13 feet in thick, with an average annual output of some 700,000 tonnes. The mine was closed when the volume of ironstone remaining in the mine made the cost of running it unprofitable for the owners and it was closed in 1923.

Our walk will take us from the car park at Grewgrass Lane and in a circuit around Errington Woods. The walk has some modest climbing but is predominantly flat, with a chance of mud if it has been raining in the days prior, so good walking boots are advised. The walk will take approximately 3 to 4 hours, so it is strongly advised that visitors bring drinking water with them as we will have no access to clean running water anywhere along our walk.
