Inner Alchemy: Rumi’s Spiritual Psychology
A one-day immersive retreat hosted by The Lantern Initiative and Rumi Center for Spirituality & the Arts.
There is a world within us that often goes unexplored. Beneath our thoughts, emotions and everyday concerns lies the heart, longing to return to its Creator, yet often veiled by the distractions and demands of everyday life. Through his poetry and spiritual teachings, Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi offers us a profound map of the soul, inviting us to awaken the heart, refine the self and journey towards a deeper intimacy with Allah.
Rumi’s teachings offer a sophisticated understanding of the human condition, illuminating the subtle workings of the nafs, the heart and the soul. Rooted in the Islamic spiritual tradition, they invite us to cultivate greater self-awareness, emotional maturity and a deeper relationship with Allah. They also offer timeless insights into the interconnected nature of spiritual and psychological wellbeing, reminding us that lasting transformation begins from within.
Join us for a day with Baraka Blue as we journey through the timeless wisdom of the Mathnawi, exploring Rumi’s understanding of the inner life and the path of spiritual transformation. Together, we will examine the journey of the soul, the nature of the nafs, the purification of the heart and the transformative power of Divine love and remembrance. Alongside these teachings, we will consider how this rich spiritual tradition can deepen our understanding of ourselves, strengthen our inner resilience and inform our approach to emotional and spiritual wellbeing.
Hosted jointly by The Lantern Initiative and The Rumi Center, this immersive retreat is designed to engage both heart and mind. Through teaching, contemplation and shared reflection, we will create space to engage deeply with Rumi’s insights and consider their relevance to our own inner lives.
Our retreat will take place in the beautiful surroundings of Leicester Botanic Garden, a hidden sanctuary established over a century ago and home to rare plants, historic collections and peaceful woodland walks. Originally created as a place for the study of medicinal herbs, native flora and the healing relationship between people and the natural world, it provides a fitting backdrop for a day centred on reflection, renewal and inner transformation. Surrounded by trees, gardens and open green spaces, we will have the opportunity to reconnect with both creation and Creator, away from the pace and noise of daily life.
Throughout the day, our time together will include:
• Teachings from Baraka Blue rooted in Rumi’s spiritual tradition
• Guided contemplative practices and periods of muraqabah
• Small group discussions to deepen reflection and shared learning
• Personal journalling and quiet moments of contemplation
• Time to wander the gardens and absorb the beauty of your surroundings
• Opportunities to connect with others in a warm, welcoming and reflective environment
Whether you have long cherished Rumi’s writings or are encountering them for the first time, this retreat offers an opportunity to engage deeply with one of Islam’s richest spiritual traditions in the company of fellow seekers. We hope you leave with a richer understanding of Rumi’s teachings, practical tools for ongoing reflection and a renewed appreciation of the relationship between spiritual growth, psychospiritual wellbeing and the journey towards Allah.

About Baraka Blue
Baraka Blue is a poet, educator and founder of the Rumi Center for Spirituality and the Arts. His work explores the intersection of poetry, spirituality, and the inner sciences of the soul. He holds a BA in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and an MA in Islamic Studies, where his academic work focused on classical Islamic thought, Sufism, and the rich literary traditions of the Persian and Arabic worlds. Alongside his academic training, he has also studied with Sufi teachers across the Muslim world, gaining direct exposure to living traditions of spiritual practice and transmission.
For more than two decades he has studied the works of Rumi, Ibn ʿArabī, al-Ghazālī, and other masters of the Sufi tradition, exploring how their insights illuminate the perennial questions of human existence: the nature of the self, the meaning of love, and the path to spiritual awakening.
As a poet and performer, Baraka Blue has shared his work internationally through concerts, lectures, and retreats. His creative work bridges classical spiritual wisdom with contemporary artistic expression, bringing the teachings of the great traditions into dialogue with modern life.
Through the Rumi Center, he offers courses, retreats, and programs devoted to the study of the world’s great wisdom texts and the cultivation of spiritual insight through art, literature, and contemplative practice.
His teaching approach combines close reading of classical texts, philosophical reflection, and practical spiritual insight, helping students engage these teachings not only as historical works but as living guides to the transformation of the self.
