Ego: Delusions of Grandeur
EGO: DELUSIONS OF GRANDEUR
Challenging The Self You Think You Are
Who do you think you are, and how much of that identity is actually built upon pride and self-admiration?
Drawing primarily upon Imam al-Ghazālī’s Kitāb Dhamm al-Kibr wa’l-ʿUjb, this two-hour workshop explores the hidden ways the ego shapes our perception of ourselves and others. We will examine Ghazālī’s seven sources of pride and bring them into the modern world; from knowledge and religious practice to beauty, wealth, achievement, status and social media.
Through reflection, discussion and practical frameworks, we’ll explore ʿujb (self-admiration), kibr (pride), self-deception and their antidotes, asking a difficult but important question: are we seeing ourselves as we really are, or as we have learned to imagine ourselves?
A thought-provoking exploration of the ego, its illusions, and the beginning of its cure, rooted in the wisdom of one of Islam’s greatest scholars.
