Majority Rules: A Documentary Screening and Talkback about Ranked Choice / Instant Runoff Voting Reform

Sun Mar 2, 2025 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM The Terrace Theater. 1956d Maybank Hwy, James Island, 29412

How did the American electoral system become so dysfunctional? Can changes to how we vote change our entire system for the better?

Join the League of Women Voters Charleston Area for a screening of Majority Rules, a compelling documentary that follows the state of Alaska as it led the nation in instituting a pair of electoral forms in 2020 that eliminated traditional party primaries, and allowed voters to rank their general election candidates by preference.  Follow the drama as dozens of candidates - including former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin - vie for the state's coveted Congressional seat, while both politicians and voters adapt to new election rules. Under this system (known as Ranked Choice or Instant Runoff Voting), general election winners must earn the endorsement of a majority of voters.

Veteran political documentary filmmaker AJ Schnack and crew go inside the campaign trail in Alaska and travel the country to interview reform supporters and opponents, looking at where these reforms are already in place and may soon be adopted.  Postscript: In 2024, Alaskans voted to keep Ranked Choice/Instant Runoff Voting reform in place.

This is timely! The SC Legislature is likely to take up this issue in 2025.  The state already uses ranked choice voting for SC residents who vote absentee from abroad.

This screening will be followed by a Talkback with Nicole Sanchez, President and Co-founder of Better Ballot SC and Jeri Cabot, VP, Citizen Engagement at LWV Charleston and a former political science professor and Dean at College of Charleston.

*** This event is presented by LWV Charleston with funding support from Unite America, a nonprofit venture philanthropy firm that invests in nonpartisan election reform; and in collaboration with Better Ballot SC, a nonprofit that advocates for Instant Runoff Voting in South Carolina.

The screening is open to the public.  RSVP requested! A $10 per ticket donation is suggested. The amount can be adjusted at checkout.
