Join or Die! A Community Movie Matinee hosted by LWV Charleston

Join or Die is an engaging documentary about why you should join a club -- and why the fate of America depends on it!  

Follow the story of America's civic unraveling through the informative and enlightening journey of Robert ("Bob") Putnam, Harvard University political scientist whose legendary "Bowling Alone" research into the decline of civic participation may hold the answers to our democracy's present crisis!

Come see the film because you're a member (or prospective member) of the League, because you're a member of any organized group or team of any kind, or because you are thinking about joining a group!  This is a film to be inspired by, and to enjoy with other people. 

The film includes appearances by influential fans and scholar including Pete Buttigieg, Hillary Clinton, and Eddie Glaude Jr, and highlights inspirational groups from neighborhoods across the country. But the genius of this film is that uses the experiences of regular people in small towns and cities to explore urgent civic questions.  What makes democracy work?  Why is American democracy in crisis?  Most importantly, what can we do about it?

Join or Die has been shown at hundreds of community gatherings across the country. It has sparked discussion, energized groups, and built new connections among people.  It has also won numerous awards on the film festival circuit.  We are delighted to be bringing it to Charleston for this special summer afternoon event.
