Long Branch Creek : A Two-Part Event Exploring the History and Workings of a Beautiful SC Tidal Creek

Thu Jul 13, 2023 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM EDT Online, Zoom

The League of Women Voters Charleston Area is pleased to offer this educational program about our local environment, comprised of both an online discussion and an on-site field trip!  Attendance is free and open to LWVSC members and the general public.

Part 1: Thursday, July 13 on Zoom 6:30-7:30 pm: Join restoration ecologist and environmental educator Rebecca Fanning virtually as she introduces us to Long Branch Creek in West Ashley and explains how past decisions have affected this natural ecosystem, and what could (or should) be done to restore ecological balance. Long Branch Creek is tucked between the suburban neighborhoods of West Ashley. The solutions that guest speaker Rebecca Fanning will describe could be applied to individual lots, or as watershed-wide initiatives that could be replicated almost anywhere in the state!  Attendance at this virtual presentation is recommended but not required for attending the field trip, described below.

Part 2: Saturday, July 15 at Long Branch Creek area, West Ashley, 8:30-11:30 am:  Join fellow environmental enthusiasts on site as Rebecca Fanning, assisted by LWVCA's Master Naturalist Judith Kramer, guides our walk in this rare undeveloped area in West Ashley. We'll see how water finds its way into Long Branch Creek, learn more about land management and alternative land stewardship strategies, and walk a trail that leads past a civil war battery and a beech-oak forest that's home to many animals and wild plants. The hike is no more than two miles long and mostly flat. The Field trip will be limited to 25 walkers so sign up now to reserve your space!

LWV Members, friends, and the general public are invited to sign up for these free educational events. Sign up for one or both event tickets by clicking on the blue "Join the guestlist" button.

WALKERS WILL MEET in the cul-de-sac at Osprey Cove Apartments, 949 E Estates Blvd., Charleston 29414                                  Parking is available anywhere on the street near the end of East Estates Boulevard. Pay attention to signage, though, and do not park in spaces off East Estates that are reserved for the apartment complex.

SEE THIS MAP - THE MEETING PLACE IS MARKED AS "B".  A REMINDER EMAIL WILL BE SENT THE DAY PRIOR.  Please bring water and dress appropriately for walking through a natural area and creek!  Water, bug spray, sun protection recommended!

For those interested in meeting for lunch after the walk, we'll gather at DELLZVILLE, 1617 Ashley River Road, which is about 10 minutes' drive.
