Brits Abroad - The British Perspective From The EU
Wed 9 Jun 2021 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM BST
Online, Zoom
Description
For too long, British citizens in the EU have been out of sight and out of mind - of the British government, and the British public. Most have no voice and no vote, despite close ties to the UK. They took advantage of opportunities that allowed us to live, love, work, study and retire in Europe - opportunities that are now sadly closed to many of us, thanks to Brexit. It is up to us all to fight to regain what was lost, for British citizens everywhere - no matter where they call home.
This webinar is told from the perspective of Brits who live abroad and have first-hand experience of the changes brought about since Brexit.
Bremain in Spain was born the day after the 2016 Brexit referendum, and Sue Wilson has been Chair of Bremain since September of that year. Sue is an active pro-European campaigner, focussing on the rights of UK nationals living in the EU. She believes Brexit was a catastrophic act of self-harm, and the UK's rightful place in as the heart of Europe. Sue is also campaigning for the restoration of voting rights for disenfranchised overseas voters. She has made many public speeches against Brexit in both the UK & Brussels and writes regular press articles in both the UK & Spain.
Debbie Williams is the founder of the award-winning group Brexpats – Hear Our Voice and currently lives in Spain. Originally from Llanelli, Wales, Debbie has lived in Germany, Belgium and The Netherlands. Debbie has participated in and provided expert input on citizen’s rights in committee hearings, select committee hearings and expert panels. She has also presented to The Dutch Parliament, The European Parliament and The Spanish Ministry of Justice. She has also attended high level meetings in the European Commission and Westminster. Also, she has participated in round table events and embassy meetings in The Netherlands and Spain. She regularly engages with other groups, stakeholders, embassy officials and political representatives. She is also co-editor of the book In Limbo Too and winner of the European Citizen's Prize 2017.
