Expanding the Art Song Canon - Introducing Afrikaans Art Song

Fri 16 Oct 2026 1:05 PM - 1:55 PM Clothworkers Centenary Concert Hall, LS2 9JT

In this recital three South Africans Bronwen Forbay (soprano), Christiaan Bester (baritone), and Nico de Villiers (piano) come together to present a programme of Afrikaans art song. In their seminal work "Afrikaans Art Song Literature: Translation and Pronunciation Guide" (Oxford University Press, 2025), Forbay and Bester introduce the essentials of Afrikaans lyric diction while highlighting the richness, depth, and socio-political context of its art song repertoire for soprano and baritone. Forbay is Associate Professor of Voice at Furman University (Greenville, South Carolina, USA). Bester is Associate Professor of Voice & Director of Opera at Oklahoma State University (Stillwater, Oklahoma, USA). De Villiers is the Deputy Head of Vocal Studies at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester.
