The Libertyville Historical Society was officially founded in 1955 as the Libertyville-Mundelein Historical Society. During that year, a steering committee proposed the society's goal and purpose: "to discover, study, discuss, collect, and preserve information and materials relative to the history of the community." The name was changed to the Libertyville Historical Society in 2022 to better reflect the focus of the collection and the society’s activities.

The Ansel B. Cook Home is the society's museum and archive.
