Notes on venue, accessibility etc

Getting there:
The venue "The Monkey Temple" is in a spacious room at the back of a private property, accessed via a wooden boardwalk with one step up. It is a 2 minute walk from the 96 Tram, Stop 22 - 22-Albert St/Nicholson St. There is limited free parking on Albert Street or a low cost car park at Brunswick Village, 3 minutes walk from the venue.

Venue Accessibility:
Unfortunately the venue is not wheelchair accessible because there is a step up through a single door way along the boardwalk. Those with limited walking mobility can be assisted up the step and then can move around on a single level, including access to the bathrooms and workshop space.

Content Accessibility:
Needle felting, the medium being used is very simple and adaptable so most people are able to access this crafting form. Needle felting does involve stabbing very sharp needles in and out of a foam block repeatedly, so requires some fine motor skills to avoid accidental pricking of fingers. This medium may not be suited to folks with a lot of involuntary movement. Folks with arthritis or other upper body mobility restrictions generally find that needle felting is easier to work with than other repetitive crafts such as knitting.

Needle felting can be experienced by people who have low vision with collaboration around the question: “How can we make this work safely?” I am very willing to collaborate to find a way for people who have low vision to participate.

Our slow crafting circle does include conversation and verbal instruction. If you are a deaf or hearing impaired person, please get in touch to talk about how we can incorporate communication tools and styles which you can access.

The nature of our Slow Crafting Circle is that we have space to talk about things which are meaningful to us. Sometimes this has an element of emotional depth and some people talk about things that have a high emotional content. Although I have a number of years experience in holding spaces like this, I am not a trained therapist or psychologist. We begin each session discussing how the space can be safe for everyone and I encourage each individual to take responsibility for their own needs. Participants are welcome to leave the space or take a moment as needed, if the conversation is causing difficulties. I encourage individuals to seek professional support for their mental wellbeing as required.

Inclusivity:

All genders are welcome to participate in this slow crafting circle. Adults and mature teenage participants only.

I’m always very keen and willing to learn, support and explore with participants their unique requirements so please do get in touch if you have an questions about accessibility.

If you need a payment plan or hardship ticket, please reach out! I truly want everyone to be able to join this beautiful, restorative space.
