From Orbit to Ocean Deep: Gala Dinner with Dr Kathryn Sullivan at Hopetoun House
Tue 1 Apr 2025 6:45 PM - Wed 2 Apr 2025 12:30 PM
Hopetoun House, EH30 9RW
Description
Only one person in history has both orbited the earth and visited the deepest point of our planet's oceans: Dr Kathryn Sullivan. In October 1984, Dr Sullivan flew on the Challenger shuttle, becoming the first American woman to spacewalk. In June 2020, she travelled in a deep-sea submersible to the Challenger Deep in the depths of the Pacific Ocean.
Today, Dr Sullivan is best known as an inspirational speaker and as 'the most vertical person on earth'. We are thrilled to offer up to 150 guests an exceptional opportunity to hear this pioneering woman of science speak in the surroundings of one of Scotland's most impressive stately homes.
The evening commences at 6:45pm with a drinks reception in Hopetoun House, during which guests will be free to explore the public rooms. We then move to the Ballroom for the rest of the evening, where dinner will be served at 7:30pm. Dr Sullivan will speak and take questions at 9pm, followed by opportunities to buy signed copies of her book 'Handprints on Hubble', for photography, and (from 10:30pm) for dancing to live music from the Magio String Quartet. Tickets will be available for purchase during the evening for an exclusive selection of prestigious raffle prizes.
All proceeds from this event will support the Project 600 campaign of Aspire Linlithgow, the major fundraising campaign of St Michael's Church of Scotland, Linlithgow - the Challenger Church. For further information please see here. St Michael's is part of Linlithgow and Avon Valley Church of Scotland (registered charity no. SC016185).
