The Coasters rose to popularity with a string of hits during the doo-wop musical era of the 50s and early 60s. Now paying homage to the late Cornell Gunter, Cornell Gunter’s Coasters are renowned for the group’s classic American Rhythm & Blues and Rock n' Roll sounds. With the release of hit singles “Young Blood” and “Searchin” in 1957, The Coasters jumped onto the national scene. Within the next few years, The Coasters released several top hits including “Yakety Yak,” “Charlie Brown,” “Along Came Jones,” “Poison Ivy” and “Little Eygpt”. Much of the group’s music was imitated during the 1960s, putting The Coasters down in history as a part of the Beach music, Rhythm & Blues, and vocalist group movements.
The Coasters have won a Grammy® award, have been nominated for seven Tony awards, and were inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 (The first group to be inducted). Many of the Coasters’ songs are featured in the Broadway musical “Smokey Joe’s Cafe.”
Cornell Gunter was a member of the legendary group, The Coasters from 1958-61. He sang on mega-hits “Charlie Brown”, “Along Came Jane”, and “Poison Ivy” just to name a few. Gunter also spent time as a member of The Platters and even performed with Dinah Washington. Gunter was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 along with the rest of The Coasters. After Cornell Gunter’s tragic death in 1990, Gunter’s off-branch group then known as The Fabulous Coasters renamed the group Cornell Gunter’s Coasters in his memory.
