On Bullying, School and Power

What is bullying? How does it work? Why does it happen? How does it relate to discipline? Our panel will address these and other questions, exploring the function and malfunction of power in schools and elsewhere. Morag Edwards, James Scudamore and Jonathan Taylor have written about bullying in very different educational contexts. They will read from their work, talk about their experiences, and there will also be time for questions and comments.

Under the author name Isobel Ross, Morag Edwards has written a memoir about her co-ed boarding school experience, within the framework of developmental psychology: Almost Boys – The Psychology of Co-Ed Boarding in the 1960s. Before retiring, Morag worked as an educational psychologist for over thirty years and now uses her experience to help others understand the psychological implications of early boarding for young children. Morag writes historical fiction as Morag Edwards and contemporary fiction as Isobel Ross. 

James Scudamore is the author of the novels English Monsters, Wreaking, Heliopolis and The Amnesia Clinic. He has received the Somerset Maugham Award and been nominated for the Costa Award, the Dylan Thomas Prize, the Commonwealth Writers' Prize and the Booker Prize.

Jonathan Taylor teaches Creative Writing at the University of Leicester. His most recent book is the memoir A Physical Education: On Bullying, Discipline & Other Lessons. 

There will be an opportunity to buy the authors' books and have them signed, but please do bring cash with you on the day.
