About this course

This Carbon Literacy course is arranged by Stockport Council as part of its Climate Action Now programme. Designed by and for Stockport organisations, the course was developed with the kind support of Manchester Metropolitan University and local businesses Litmus Sustainability, musicMagpie, One+All and BASF. 

The in-person element of the training is delivered by Litmus Sustainability's team of experts, who have 25 years' experience in the world of business climate action and sustainability.

What is Carbon Literacy?

Carbon Literacy is the foundational knowledge needed to understand, communicate and take action on climate change at home and at work. A Carbon Literacy course is one day's learning on climate change that is accredited to the nationally-recognised Carbon Literacy Standard. There are now around 80,000 certified Carbon Literate individuals in the UK.

What does the training cover?

This course includes a half-day in-person workshop in Stockport and access to video resources and interviews to watch in your own time. The in-person workshop is an interactive, enjoyable engaging session that covers: the science and language of climate change; the risks and trends affecting your organisation; how to set a long-term vision for prospering in a lower carbon world; how to identify and prioritise your most important impacts and actions; and how to communicate sustainability effectively with others.

How much does it cost?

Stockport Council has partnered with Litmus Sustainability to offer its Carbon Literacy training at the low cost of £150 in order to cater for organisations of all sizes. A discounted price of £100 is also available for charities and micro-enterprises (fewer than 10 employees). This price covers the cost of the workshop and managing the Carbon Literacy certification process for each delegate.

Who should attend?

Any business, charity or social enterprise located in Stockport can attend this training course. It is designed for all levels, from business leaders looking to develop and lead their organisation's sustainability strategy to employees looking to make a difference within their organisation. 

There are no prerequisites for attending the course. You don't need to be an expert on climate change - simply bring an interest and willingness to learn, and the course leaders will do the rest!

What will I get out of it?

Carbon Literacy training is ideal for helping organisations, employees and leaders to understand and reduce their carbon footprint (and reduce costs in the process), create a culture of sustainability within the workforce and strengthen cross-cutting skills like innovation thinking and risk management.

Research shows that Carbon Literacy or similar training can achieve 5-15% carbon savings per person. Carbon Literacy can also contribute to wider workforce satisfaction: 93% of people say playing their part in climate action is important for their motivation and wellbeing at work.
