Join us at LSTM for an inspiring talk from Dr Obioma Chijioke-Akaniro — paediatrician, public health practitioner, scientist, and founder of the Girl Child Education and Women Health Development Foundation (GEWHDF).

Through her work, Dr Obioma has championed the belief that “educating a girl child is key to reducing maternal mortality.” Her foundation focuses on empowering women and girls through education, health advocacy, and community support.

Dr Obioma has played a direct role in securing scholarships for children from low-income backgrounds and has taught part-time in schools serving low-income communities. She also sits on the boards of four non-governmental organisations, contributing to initiatives that drive meaningful and lasting social change.

Internationally recognised for her expertise in innovative data analysis for programme improvement and health policy development, Dr Obioma has made significant contributions to the National Nigeria Tuberculosis Programme and other major public health initiatives.

Her work has earned numerous national and international honours, including the prestigious Presidential National Honours Award, the United Nations Model Award, and the Honourable Minister of Health Award for Best Staff, among many others.

In this talk, “I Dare to Try,” Dr Obioma will share personal reflections and insights from her remarkable career — from medicine and public health to advocacy and leadership. This session will explore the power of persistence, courage, and purpose in creating meaningful change.
