Collaborative and Proactive Solutions Live with Dr. Ross Greene, PhD!

This is the evidence-based model Dr. Greene describes in his influential books The Explosive Child, Lost at School, Lost & Found, Raising Human Beings, and the forthcoming The Kids Who Aren’t Okay: The Urgent Case for Reimagining Support, Belonging, and Hope in School, which is due for release in February, 2026. 

The CPS model has transformed thinking and practices in countless families, schools, inpatient psychiatric units, and residential and juvenile detention facilities worldwide and has been associated with dramatic reductions in adult-child conflict concerning behaviors, disciplinary referrals, detentions, suspensions, restraints, and seclusions. The model represents a significant departure from discipline-as-usual: it focuses on solving problems rather than on modifying behavior, emphasizes collaborative rather than unilateral solutions, encourages proactive rather than reactive intervention, de-emphasizes diagnostic categories, and provides practical, research-based tools for assessment and intervention. 

This webinar will draw heavily on new material from The Kids Who Aren’t Okay, with an emphasis on developmental variability, meeting every kid where they’re at, being proactive instead of reactive, and improving kids’ behavior by solving the problems that are causing them. As always, it’s uncommon common sense. 

You don't have to participate on both days. On Day One, Dr. Greene provides a general overview of the CPS model, including key themes and paradigm shifts, using the assessment instrumentation (ASUP), and solving problems collaboratively. On Day Two, he takes a deeper dive into various facets of the model, through extensive use of video examples but also leaving ample time for questions and discussion. All registered participants will receive recordings of the training following the live webinar (usually within 3-5 days after the live event has ended). Once the email has been sent, you will have access for two weeks.

• This program offers up to 12 APA Continuing Education Credits if a participant attends BOTH days (1 CE credit per hour of instructional content).
• To be eligible for APA CE credit, participants must attend the live sessions in full and complete all required attendance check-ins.
• Attendance will be verified through periodic check-ins during the live program.
• Participants are responsible for ensuring their technology allows for full participation (e.g., stable internet, Zoom access).
• A program evaluation form will be provided, but is not required to receive APA CE Credits. The form will ask participants to rate how well each educational objective was met and assess overall program satisfaction.
• APA CE credit certificates will be issued following the program after LITB staff had had an opportunity to verify attendance, check-ins, and overall eligibility.

After this training, participants will:

• Describe the five key themes of the CPS model, including focusing on problems rather than behaviors, the advantages of collaborative (rather than unilateral) problem solving, and the importance and feasibility of proactive (rather than reactive) intervention.
• Identify skills kids are struggling with and unsolved problems using the Assessment of Skills and Unsolved Problems(ASUP).
• Describe the three basic mechanisms by which adults handle unsolved problems and unmet expectations in kids (Plans A, B, and C), what is accomplished by each, and the three steps or "ingredients" of Plan B.
• Describe how to effectively implement Plan B to solve problems, enhance skills,  and reduce the frequency and intensity of concerning behavior.
• Identify the strategies for dealing with the various structural factors in schools that may impede the implementation of the CPS model.
• Describe and deal with the roadblocks commonly encountered in implementation with individual children, families, and systems.

Lectures, video demonstrations, and Q & A will be used as the primary means of instruction.

Participants in this two-day training will leave with an understanding of the CPS model's underpinnings, its refinements over the past 8-10 years, and practical assessment and intervention tools that can be brought back to and used in diverse settings.

What time does the webinar begin? To accommodate different time zones, Zoom log-in is at 9:40 a.m. ET (New York City time). Dr. Greene will begin the training at 9:45 a.m. ET and end at 5:15 p.m. ET each day.

Can I receive Continuing Education Credits? Lives in the Balance is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Lives in the Balance maintains responsibility for this program and its content. Participants must complete a post-event survey and attend the entire event live to be eligible for APA CE credits. Attendance is verified throughout the event to ensure compliance with these requirements. While these credits may be accepted for Counselors, MFT, Addiction Professionals, and Social Workers, this remains at the discretion of the licensing board. Participants are encouraged to reach out to their respective licensing board and/or state psychological association to ensure that credits earned will be accepted for their licensure purposes.

Will this training be recorded? Yes. All registered participants will receive links to the recording of the two-day training following the live webinar. Links to the recordings will be shared 3-5 days after the live webinar. From the date sent, you will have two weeks to view the recordings.

Can I receive a refund? Attendees can receive a refund 1 day before the event. Credit will not be given if you do not cancel before the event.
