Let’s Make Art is an independent, artist-led organisation based in Bristol, run by multi-disciplinary artists and practitioners Alice Hendy and Karen Davies. Founded in 2012 in a community hall with their own art supplies and a lot of imagination, Let’s Make Art has grown into one of the UK’s leading mobile ateliers and high-quality arts providers.
Known for their inventive, hands-on approach, Alice and Karen collaborate with like-minded artists and organisations across the UK to deliver high-quality, art activities for diverse audiences. Their programmes range from from intimate pop-up workshops to large-scale, major participatory projects in galleries, schools, museums, art centres, festivals, and community settings - always offering contemporary, playful, and accessible ways for children, young people, and adults to explore and express their creativity.
Through their designed and delivered We Are Family sessions for the Arnolfini’s engagement programme they ensure that everyone is welcome to take part in their offered activities. They regularly engage with over 150 participants each day, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to form meaningful connections with both the artists and their exhibited works. Participants are invited to step inside the artist’s world, make relevant links to the artworks, and experience children’s art elevated to the status it truly deserves.
In addition to designing immersive, family-friendly activities for major institutions and events, Alice and Karen produce art resources for magazines and have published a children's art book. They provide community-driven initiatives, including setting up afterschool art clubs across Bristol, mentoring facilitators to help them gain experience working with children and develop their creative skills. Alice and Karen manage the administration and plan all the activities to ensure each child experiences a wide range of materials, techniques, and approaches, building confidence and encouraging experimentation. Both founders are passionate about the importance of creative subjects in schools and believe that experiencing and making art enriches learning across all disciplines.
At the heart of their practice is a commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and sustainability. They focus on empowering children, young people and adults, including those facing barriers such as poverty, displacement, or exclusion, to explore ideas, express themselves, and make art a part of their everyday life. Through play, experimentation and co-creation by collaborating with organisations with similar approaches; Bridges For Communities, Team Canteen, Deco Publique etc, Let’s Make Art ensures every project leaves a lasting impact, encouraging creativity for everyone involved.
Alice and Karen are highly adaptable practitioners who love a challenge, turning their hands to anything that a brief demands. They design and deliver engaging activities and creative experiences for children, young people, and adults alike, demonstrating their versatility and imagination in inventing meaningful, enjoyable ways for participants to connect with art. Delivering accomplished projects for large groups is one of their fortes; some commissions require activities for over a hundred participants and they have developed tried-and-tested ways of working efficiently and creatively with available materials.
